Baja Spain 2012 took today its start in MotorLand Aragon with opposite feelings. On one hand, more then 129 vehicles and best drivers of the world make this 29th edition prove that Baja Spain couldn´t be in better shape. On the other hand, this precise morning Zaragoza´s Town Hall published today its decision of not supporting Baja Spain anymore.
Facing this circumstances, driver´s response was categorical and unanimous. “Zaragoza is wrong. Town Hall took a wrong directoon and it´s a pity. I really hope they will change their minds, because this is a decision I can´t understand..”, said 10 times Dakar winner Stéphane Peterhansel.
Isidre Esteve, back in the Baja after three years away because of the health problems he suffered from his disability described the decision as a “harmful knock both for the organization and drivers”; while Óscar Romero, three times winner in quads, highlighted that “Baja has always been together with Zaragoza and Aragon and everybody in the world knows the event and the area because of that reason, so Zaragoza should have been thanking they have such an event here”.
Apart from the institutional decisions, Peterhansel was the fastest in cars with XRaid Mini, followed by Van Loon and Russian Gadasin. Schlesser, whois currently defending his position as leader of the Cross Country World Cup, left the track and stayed stucked for many time, loosing a lot of positions. The frenchman Jo Adua with De Rooy’s IVECO Tracker EvoI was the fastest truck in front of Elisabethe Jacinto (MAN) and David Oliveras (Mercedes).
