In the past weeks Sólyom Team repaired on its race car the damages and failures obtained during Toolimpex Cup then – as any other racing teams – wanted to make a test to check the car. Finally they had to postpone the test by one day because the car became stubborn and its gearbox didn’t take the gears.
On Saturday morning in enerGOfair’s workshop the team managed to set up the suspension more than perfectly. But in running the members of the team became aware that in first gear with clutch used the car starts at high rev plus the gearbox gives a metallic, scratching sound. Returning to the workshop of Sólyom Team, suffering until 3 am started. The basic problem was that the riveting of the clutch disc suddenly built in and taken out for last year’s 24 Hours of Athens was not perfect. This year this disc was put back into the HAWKIA and by now it became worn out enough that the rivets started to brush against the flywheel’s screw-heads. So a new disc was built in the car, but with this it simply didn’t take the gears. The mechanics took off and built in again the gearbox 10-12 times, until at about 3 am Sunday morning the problem was solved. The exact nature of the problem didn’t clear out, because three things had to be modified to make it work.
Olivér Sólyom: “It was a nightmare. Whatever we did, it simply didn’t want to work. We were constantly on the phone with Matyi, who gave us hints from different manufacterer’s and non-manufacturer’s films and softwares. Finally we managed to repair the clutch and we learned the lesson: before a test we have to test!”
On Sunday morning the car was finally able to run. In the first three kilometres of the test the newly mounted powersteering-cooling blew up (because of two faulty clamps) and because of that in the engine room everything became covered with oil evenly. During the day some other minor problems emerged, but they were solved by the team one after another.
Olivér Sólyom: “Only 15-20 minor to-dos were left for the last two days and half of them are ready already. The point is that we are ready with the suspension setup, for me this was the most important. Matyi is still not happy with the rear of the car but we are going to precise it before departure. But I am very happy with the fact that we were ready before the last moment and it’s even possible that we can have some rest before the departure, because HAWKIA is ready for Himod!”
Céltrans’97 Cup is organised in Himod on 24-26th May. Sólyom Team is looking forward to the battle on the areas near Győr and Sopron with great excitement as a CEZ round attracts a lot of foreign competitors, a populous field is to be expected.
